Rise Up Atlanta
Ladder Collection: April 15-17, 2010
Sculpture Installation: April 21-28, 2010
On view through May in Freedom Park
This community project will culminate in a temporary sculpture in Freedom Park. The sculpture will be located on the hill where Freedom Parkway dead ends into Moreland Avenue and it will be constructed from ladders borrowed from across the Atlanta community.
Ladders are being loaned by individuals, businesses, and other organizations and every ladder will bear a tag identifying its lender. Each ladder represents the hopes and dreams of its lender, and bound together, they will create a work of art that is a metaphor for the aspirations of the community as a whole. Each ladder plays an essential role in the final sculpture, just as every person plays an essential role in the life of a community.
The project will open Saturday, April 30, and it will remain on view through May. Ladders will be returned to their lenders the first week of June or, if the owner prefers, donated to the Atlanta Community ToolBank.
This project is supported in part by Concrete Ideas LLC and the City of Atlanta Office of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs. Flux Projects is also grateful to the ladder coordinators who are assisting with neighborhood participation in the project
