FLUX EXCHANGE 2017 OVERVIEW
The Flux Exchange is an exploratory incubator series that invites three artists to explore the city of Atlanta as a site for a future large-scale public project. Xaviera Simmons (New York), Cheryl Pope (Chicago) and Alexandre Arrechea (Miami) have been selected for the 2017 program as their acclaimed artistic practices have current social relevance and opportunity for public engagement. Each artist will visit Atlanta to engage with local artists and cultural contributors, research the physical and cultural landscape of the city, and execute a public program. Specific dates and details for each visit are forthcoming.
XAVIERA SIMMONS - WINTER (FEB/MAR)
Xaviera Simmons's body of work spans photography, performance, video, sound, sculpture and installation. Her studio practice is rooted in an ongoing investigation of experience, memory, abstraction, present and future histories - specifically shifting notions surrounding landscape, character development and formal processes.
CHERYL POPE - SPRING
Cheryl Pope is a visual artist focused in sculpture, installation, and performance. Her work questions and responds to issues of identity as it relates to the individual and the community, specifically in regards to race, gender, class, history, power and place. Her practice emerges from the act and politics of listening.
ALEXANDRE ARRECHEA - SUMMER (JULY/AUG)
Alexandre Arrechea's work employs visual metaphors to address ongoing social themes of inequality, cultural disenfranchisement, and the disputed position of art in a global, media driven society. Suffused with humor and levity, Arrechea’s work often reveals the powerful potential of artistic intervention to shock us out of our blasé acceptance of everyday submission.
